Brief introduction

Xinjiang is a grand book with the Tian Shan as its spine. On it stands the Kunlun Mountains serving as a source of Chinese mythology for several thousand years, flows the Tarim River along which numerous stories emerge, and lie scattered oases where keys to decipher human civilization can be found. The unity of all landforms excluding oceans is what amazes visitors at their first sight of Xinjiang. Its mountains and rivers are no doubt the key to truly understanding it. Living under such boundless sky and on such vast land, the locals find pleasure in these mountains and rivers that have shaped their embracing mind. Resting on the notion that we are a reflection of our environment, Mountains and Rivers in Xinjiang is a two-season documentary with three episodes for each season, and each episode is 38 minutes for the first season and 52 minutes for the second season. Its planning and production began in 2019 and was completed in 2022.
