We are:

CathayPlay is a global streaming platform for Chinese-language independent art films, with over 700 films currently online. The existing works look at society from different perspectives, and include a mix of artistic exploration, emotional expression, culture and art. Despite the recent boom in Chinese cinema, there is still a lack of opportunities for Chinese independent filmmakers to present their work to a global audience, and we provide a platform for these filmmakers and audiences to do so.

In addition to an extensive library of films, CathayPlay also includes spotlighted filmmaker dialogues, special screenings, and independent publishing, and actively collaborates with Chinese film festivals/colleges and universities around the world to promote Chinese-language independent art films. From experimental animations of just a few minutes to full-length documentaries, we maintain a frequency of weekly releases to ensure that viewers have a unique perspective on the cultural spectrum of contemporary China and Chinese society.

Our hope:

To collect Chinese anthropological images from all over the world, in order to present anthropological perspectives through images, to discover more excellent works and creators, and to cooperate with universities/academic institutions globally, to present a broad spectrum of Chinese anthropological images, and to help the works to reach a wider international stage while more viewers enter into the methodology of Chinese independent cinema/anthropological research through different perspectives.

We are committed to building the Anthropological Video Column as a platform for dialogue across national boundaries and disciplinary paradigms, establishing a close connection between anthropological video authors and global followers through online screenings, institutional collections, and scholarly dialogues, and exploring potential possibilities for future development.
