In Tianshou second year, an appalling event occurs in Weizhou. The owner of a pawnshop is murdered. Rumor among the folks says it's the work of the God of Death. Someone even claims that they saw the God of Death held a feast with their own eyes. The rumor expands into many versions, but all fingers are pointed at Empress Wu and her chaotic governance, which leads to the wrath of God. When WU Zetian hears the message in the capital city, she is furious, and orders DI Renjie to investigate the case. DI Renjie heads to Weizhou along with LONG Jing and LIU Yue'er. GU Xianling, the Inspector of Weizhou, tells DI Renjie and the others about the whole case, and believes it was the work of the God of Death. DI Renjie scolds him for his inanity. Afterwards, DI Renjie carries out an inquiry at the pawnshop. The wife of the pawnshop owner tells DI Renjie that before his husband died, he got hold of a Night Feast Painting, and he had stayed at home, spending all of his time on it in the following days. One day, he suddenly grabbed the Night Feast Painting and got out of his house with excitement, and died on the way unexpectedly.
